Bike the Golden Gate Bridge in San Fransisco, CA
Rent a bike and cruise over the Golden Gate Bridge while exploring Golden Gate Beach and Sausalito. In San Francisco you’ll find plenty of great places to explore. So much so that we added a few pics from our bonus excursions at the bottom.
San Fransisco is full of many amazing adventures that are worth your calorie expenditure. The Golden Gate Bridge, Sausalito, cable cars, Fisherman’s Wharf, Alcatraz, Lombard Street or exploring one of the sports stadium are just a few things you can do to keep moving while in the Golden City.
On this adventure we soaked in the sun at Fisherman’s Wharf where we tried the famous sourdough bread which was brought there in 1849. The same ingredients and techniques are used today, making this bread a true flavor from the California Gold Rush. With its crunchy crust and soft, chewy center it is truly worth its weight in gold.
From the northern waterfront of Fisherman’s Wharf, we ferried over to Alcatraz where we walked the famous footsteps of gangsters Al Capone, George “Machine Gun” Kelly and the infamous “Birdman of Alcatraz.” We didn’t quite escape the prison like John Anglin, Clarence Anglin and Frank Morris did in 1962, but we did walk over 3,000 steps and burn close to 300 calories in the process.
Our next adventure took us to Blazing Saddles bike shop where we rented a convoy of bikes and peddled our way to Golden Gate Beach for some great views of the bridge. The Golden Gate Bridge is one of the most internationally recognized and most photographed bridge in the world. It is also considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World, so of course we had to take our pictures. From there we biked the path over the iconic Golden Gate Bridge, and with the wind at our backs, rolled into Sausalito.
In Sausalito we split our time between biking and walking around town. We checked out the beautiful waterfront and colorful array of sailboats floating about. We dip and dived into many local shops searching for the perfect souvenirs. After lunch and a scoop of ice cream, we planned our exit back to San Francisco. Hot, tired and having already logged another 600 calories biking, we decided to ferry back and save our legs for another day.
This trip to San Fransisco was a great experience, even while lugging a one year old around to enjoy the adventure with us. If you get a chance, stretch you legs and enjoy the warm weather and scenic views of San Fransisco, California.

Challenge Yourself
The path up to the Golden Gate Bridge is clear with a mix of paved and dirt paths. You will encounter some incline on the way to the bridge, but the path on the bridge is fairly smooth. There is some increased resistance while on the bridge, but anyone decent on a bike can push through it. The views from the bridge and wind flowing through your bones make for a memorable experience for just about anyone. The entire trip from start to finish could cover between 4 to 7 miles and burn up a cool 300-500 calories. Not bad for a challenge in paradise.
Find Great Photo Ops
The views from the Golden Gate Bridge are beautiful indeed. Although you’re peddling you legs off, be sure to slow it down and take it all in. The bridge itself is one of the longest suspension bridges in the world (19th) so take as many great photos as you’d like.
