About: Byrd’s Famous Cookies

A little cookie with big Southern Charm.

Founded in Savannah, Georgia in 1924, Byrd’s Famous Cookies has grown from a small family bakery into a nationally loved brand. Known for their signature shortbread-style cookies, they built their reputation on quality ingredients and Southern charm, offering favorites like Key Lime Coolers, Scotch Oatmeal, and Georgia Peach. Today, the company offers a wide variety of flavors and gift-ready tins, making them both a local treasure and a symbol of Southern hospitality that can be shipped for any cheat day across all 50 states.

Chef's Note

Byrd’s Famous Cookies began selling cookies out of large glass jars at two for a penny in the 1920’s and would delivery them across town in a Ford Model T. Classic American cookie! Today, they still sell them out of glass jars, but the cost has changed a bit.

Experience

Our experience at Byrd’s Famous Cookies was pleasant with strong Southern vibes. The store had a warm, open‐display layout that showcased all their crispy cookies in a welcoming, boutique style. Shelves of cookies line the walls or formed islands, displaying packaged cookies, gift tins, and specialty items. The décor was very Southern with a rustic touch.

The employees are helpful (in every location we’ve been to), offering suggestions and ways to get more cookies for your money. There is a sampling area where you can sample any cookie you would like just to make sure your cheat day is perfect.

Review

Appearance

On to the cookies! Colors will vary, but the cookie sizes are the same. The cookies are small, but each hold different characteristics and appeal. One cookie sitting on a plate has little intrigue, but put a variety of these babies on a table top and the people will start talking.

Touch

Each cookie is crunchy. They are small and light. Some will have a dusted coating, while others a crumbly, buttery feel. The cookies are made well and you get a good feel for that as you hold them in your hand.

Smell

The smell are very nostalgic of classic kitchen-baked cookies. Not the fresh-baked aroma you got from grandma, but still a pure, high-quality cookie.

Taste

Lawdy! They good (trying my best to be Southern).

Look, at first bite you’ll be like “Cheaterie, WTF, bro? They are OK.” Then you sit there and grab another for ***k sakes. And then another. Then it hits you … “these things are frickin’ good, bruh!”

The flavors aren’t over the top or scream “incredible!”, but they are good — very good — and seem to get better as you eat them. There are some flavors that are better than others, but that’s entirely up to the consumer. For us, the classic Chocolate Chip Cookie is just a smash. It’s awesome. We loved the Key Lime, Lemon Cooler and Almond Shortbread.

The great thing about these cookies is the size and versatility. I’m always on the lookout for things that can be used in different ways, fun and unique gift ideas for gift baskets, get-well soon ideas, party snacks, etc. and Byrd’s Famous Cookies check all these boxes.
