Review:
If you have ever tried to go hiking with a little one, then you know the importance of a child carrier. Whether is a hike through local trails, exploring a national park or trekking through snow, a child carrier makes life much easier.
We put the Deuter Kid Comfort to the test, as we have used it all across the country. From the white sands of White Sands, NM to the trails of Yellowstone National Park, through the Grand Teton mountains and under the Arches of UT. How did the Deuter Kid Comfort hold up? Let’s get into it.
Loading:
Getting your kiddo into the carrier is a breeze. The folding kickstand comes out to stand firmly onto the ground, allowing you to load your tyke with easy. Adjust the straps and tighten them accordingly and you’re ready to rock and roll.
Comfort:
When it comes to child carriers, the two things you want most of all is safety for the child and comfort for child and carrier (person carrying the cargo). The Deuter Kid Comfort excels in both of these categories. The VariFlex ECL hip fins (aka padded hip belt) with the load adjustment straps, and adjustable sternum belt ensure that the load is distributed evenly, comfortably and secure.
When the carrier and child are strapped in and loaded up, there is a stiff feel to the pack. This is because of the metal frame that runs around the carrier to give it more rigidity and weight distribution. It’s very comfortable and secure. There are many adjustments you can make with the Kid Comfort, adjust all of the straps to your comfort level and you are ready to burn some calories. On multiple occasions we got caught up in our hike and started to climbing rocking formations, only to remember we had a child strapped to our backs. The carrier is so comfortable you’ll forget you’re wearing on occasion.
If you’re hiking in the heat, you are going to sweat under the straps. However, Deuter’s mesh netting allows for enough airflow to stay cool and comfortable in even the warmest of conditions. We hiked the famous Jenny Lake trail in Grand Teton in fairly hot conditions. We hiked to the very top, through waterfalls and vertical rocky walking paths. Although the conditions got a hot, the Kid Comfort was never uncomfortable. We never had to stop and rest or take the pack off. Our two-year old daughter was happy and relaxed the entire time.
Safety:
Your child is loaded into the carrier and strapped in. Are they safe? Unless you become clumsy and lose the ability to walk, your child is safe and secure. The Kid Comfort has a fully adjustable seat system that can be moved up and down. The child’s shoulder straps can also move up and down, allowing for the best fit possible for their ever-growing bodies. The carrier also has stirrups for your little one’s feet. We loved the idea and were so excited to secure our daughters little feet in them … however she wasn’t having it. She didn’t like them because she’s diva. Yes, two-year-old diva’s exist. We do feel like they are a great addition but we could not get any feedback on them.
Storage:
Before we used the Deuter Kid Comfort we thought we may need to carry an additional backpack for our gear. Depending on your adventure you just may. However, for our hikes the storage in the Kid Comfort was perfect. The main storage pouch is deceptively large. We loaded bottles of water, snacks, gear and bear spray with room to spare. The storage pouches on the belt allow for tons of room to store your phone, camera, pocket knife, wallet or anything else that you need quick access to. You’ll also find stretch pockets on opposite sides of you child for even more storage. Overall, incredibly designed for those who like to pack with a plan for everything.
Additional Notes:
The Deuter Kid Comfort comes with a removable canopy (or sunroof). We found this to be a great addition. There is always a concern about giving your child too much exposure to the sun and other elements. The canopy provides plenty of shade and peace of mind for our ever-running parental minds.
Storage:
The folding design of the Kid Comfort makes for a quick and easy way to collapse and store the carrier in your trunk or closet at home.
Final Thoughts:
If you love to hike, go for long walks, live in a wintery wonderland or just want a kid carrier, the Deuter Kid Comfort (or any Deuter carrier line) is a terrific option. The comfort for both the carrier and the child is incredible. We traveled across America and used the Kid Comfort hiking through trails, up volcanoes and through geyser fields. We absolutely love it and believe it’s worth every penny.
What people are saying
What they like:
“Comfortable and secure unlike any carrier I’ve ever used. Tons of storage. Child sleeps comfortably. Easy load and unload. Amazing quality. Kickstand is perfection. Lives up to the hype.”
What they don’t like:
“Expensive. Unable to wear fully-brimmed hat or hat backwards because carrier makes contact. Shoulders began to fatigue halfway through hike.”
Conclusion
The Deuter Kid Comfort is as close as it gets to a perfect child carrier. Everyone will have their own experiences, but for us it was amazing. It carried our two year old through the trails of America while securing her naps and our gear. We were able to see things and travel places we never could have reached without a comfortable carrier. We 100% recommend the Deuter Kid Comfort for anyone looking to be more active with their kids and add some adventure into their lives.
