This two-level bakery is spacious and cozy and offers up some delicious chocolate chip cookies that are a favorite among New Yorkers. City Bakery also offers White Chocolate Chip, Melted Chocolate Chip and Oatmeal Raisin cookies. |
| Maman | Maman (mother in French) is the creation of Benjamin Sormonte and Elisa Marshall. It offers both savory and sweet foods inspired from the south of France and North America. Their high quality, locally-sourced ingredients are the root of their delicious menu. The French-American bakery sells a selection of savory baked goods, breakfast and lunch options. But what really makes Maman sensational is that damn chocolate chip cookie they call the Nutty Chocolate Chip Cookie. It's made of almonds, macadamias, walnuts, sea salt and a “top secret” French dark chocolate. While they won't tell you what chocolate they use my money is on Valrhona. This cookie made the list of Oprah's Favorite Things 2017 and it's easy to see why. They also offer homemade Oreos and Oatmeal Raisin Cookies. |
| Breads Bakery | Uri Scheft opened up Breads Bakery in 2013 as he looked to bring flavors from his bakery Lehamim Bakery in Tel Aviv, Israel to New York City. If you're at Breads then your buying the Chocolate Babka ... even if you don't like chocolate -- or babka. But if you're here for cookies then look no further then their Hamentashen (triangle cookie with a filled center), Chocolate Chip and other various flavors. You can not go wrong with anything from Breads. It's world-class yum. |
| Patent Coffee | You want a dual threat? I'll give you a dual threat. Patent, a creative concept from Ryan McKenzie, is a coffee shop that offers pastries and tasty coffee by day, but by night it transforms into Patent Pending, a speakeasy and underground bar. To access the 34-seat cocktail bar you'll have to buzz in at street level, walk through the coffee shop and through a concealed door. But if you want coffee then Patent ain't too shabby. Order up anything from your standard coffee or latte and you'll be more than satisfied. However if you're looking for cookies then you found yourself a hidden gem. Baked fresh, Patent brought on Bon Appetit’s senior food editor Claire Saffitz to create two original cookie recipes. You'll find these beauts to be thin, a little crispy but amazingly delectable. |
Cupcakes ![]() | |
| Baked by Melissa | Melissa Ben-Ishay started Baked by Melissa in 2008 after getting fired from her job. A 24-year-old Ben-Ishay showed up to work one day as an assistant media planner and got the ax. That defining moment in her life catapulted her into the mini-cupcake stratosphere. Her first store -- or pick-up window -- opened up in SoHo and now, more than a decade later, she has 14 stores in the NYC area and ships nationwide to all 50 states. These bite-sized treats are fantastic! Don't try and one-bite these little beauts -- they are made to dominate. One bite, melt in your mouth, swallow, cheesy grin, onto the next cupcake. They are small but extremely moist and full of flavor. Each one is like a little party in your mouth. With tons of flavors to choose from you won't have any trouble finding one you like. Popular flavors include: Tie Dye, Cookies & Cream, Peanut Butter & Jelly, Cookie Dough, Red Velvet and Chocolate Chip Pancake. There hasn't been a cupcake I didn't like from Baked by Melissa so cheat your heart out on these little nuggets. |
| Minnie’s Bake Shop | Cathy Cook left behind a career as a prop stylist on photo shoots for magazines, advertising and cookbooks after enrolling in the Professional Pastry Program at the Institute of Culinary Education in New York. She launched Minnie’s Bake Shop in 2012, and named it after her great grandmother, who taught her how to bake. Minnie's describes their little cake creations as 1 1/4"-square, two-layer bite-sized cake composed of two delicious, individually baked moist cakes; eight generous dollops of icing; and a luscious topping. These little bites are incredibly scrumptious and are perfect for any occasion or just because. Minnie's does not have a shop. They are made to order. |

| Lady M Confections | French and Asian inspired creations, these crepe layered, pastry cream and whipped cream filled cakes are tasty and unique. Their most popular dessert is the Mille Crepes cake, made from twenty paper-thin handmade crepes, layered with a crème filling and topped with a sugary glaze. They are pricey but delicious. |
| Breads Bakery | Uri Scheft opened up Breads Bakery in 2013 as he looked to bring flavors from his bakery Lehamim Bakery in Tel Aviv, Israel to New York City. If you're at Breads then your buying the Chocolate Babka ... even if you don't like chocolate -- of babka. If it's cake you seek, however, then try their Chocolate Mousse Cake or Classic Cheese Cake. Both are very, very good and favorites of locals. |
Doughnuts ![]() | |
| Dough Doughnuts | Fany Gerson is the owner, pastry chef and genius behind Dough Doughnuts. Founded in 2010, Gerson's inspiration behind one of New York City's best doughnuts is her Mexican heritage and European influences. These doughnuts are massive, but what makes them great isn't just the flavor, her yeast doughnuts are the most pillowy, soft, fluffy doughnut you'll ever have. Her brioche-type dough is perfect and fit for doughnut Gods. Some of her flavors include: Glazed, Blood Orange, Dulce De Leche, Hibiscus, Lemon Poppy, Mocha-Almond Crunch and Chocolate-Cocoa Nibs. |
But if you want doughnuts then wrap your palate around the Sufganiyot. Sufganiyot in Israel is just a jelly-filled doughnut, but these babies are oh so good. Fillings will vary from chocolate, vanilla or a fruit flavor. |

| Patisserie Chanson | Rory Macdonald, a London native, French baker and ex-pastry chef of Gordon Ramsay’s restaurant inside the London Hotel, opened Patisserie Chanson in 2017. The Patisserie offers up some pretty amazing treats. At Chanson's you'll find Pain Au Chocolat, Croissants, Eclairs, Cheesecakes and one of the best pastries on the planet -- the Kouign-Amann. The Kouign-Amann comes in a variety of different flavors which, mind blowingly, takes it to another level. If those amazing treats weren't enough to satisfy the sweet tooth, Chanson's has a hidden secret (OK, it's not really a secret). The Dessert Bar, which you access through the bakery, is located downstairs and seats 16 people at a time. The tasting menu is entirely focused on desserts. The tasting consists of six main courses, including several smaller tastings, altering between savory and sweet to balance out your palate. All totaled, you'll likely try 10-12 dishes per person. But if you're here for some ice cream then you're in for a treat. Their soft serve (and I love soft serve) comes in Gianduja (chocolate and hazelnut), Black Sesame, Strawberry Rhubarb and Pistachio to name a few. You can then add toppings such as pieces of heaven, also known as Kouign-Amann. |
| Made Nice | Made Nice is a creation of Stonehill Taylor and Eleven Madison Park owners Daniel Humm and Will Guidara. Together they created a sleek and casual restaurant that emphasizes seasonal ingredients and a regularly changing menu. This savory spot also offers up some down-right tasty ice cream. Their Milk and Honey soft serve is silky smooth with salted honey brittle, crumbled shortbread and crunchy meringue scattered throughout. It's an ice cream worth cheating on. |
| Chloe’s Soft Serve Fruit Co | A former lawyer, Chloe Epstein, created Chloe’s Soft Serve Fruit Co. after growing frustrated by the lack of quality ingredients in frozen yogurt and ice cream. What she created was a delicious soft serve option using only fruit, water and a touch of organic cane sugar. | Stumptown Coffee Roasters | Duane Sorenson opened Stumptown Coffee Roasters in 1999 in Portland, Oregon. He quit his head roasting job at Lighthouse Roasters Fine Coffees and ultimately created a new coffee culture. He focused on bringing top-quality coffee by getting the highest quality of coffee bean available. It has been said he broke the record for highest price ever paid for beans. Sorenson was also fully committed to direct trade practices where he would pay two or three times more than fair trade prices to ensure real sustainability and structural improvements at partner farms. However, in 2015, Stumptown Coffee Roasters was bought by Peet's Coffee for an undisclosed amount. No longer a small, hipster company, Stumptown still offers delicious coffee drinks from the Cappuccino and Americanos to tasty Cold Brews and Lattes. Sorenson, who is now clearly set for life, is working on opening a new coffee location in Portland called Puff Coffee. |
| Brooklyn Roasting Company | Jim Munson founded Brooklyn Roasting Company in 2009. The Brooklyn Roasting Company buys, roasts and sells superb coffees from around the world. All of their beans are then locally roasted every day and then packaged in their production facilities. In the summer of 2018, Brooklyn Roasting Company teamed up with IBM to show the consumer how the blockchain can be used to keep an eye on beans at every stop along the coffee's supply chain. These stops include collection at the farm, to washing, milling, exporting, roasting and retail. The bean's entire 10,000-mile adventure is tracked from farm to cup. Brooklyn Coffee Roasting Company makes very good coffee. Every Cold Brew, Latte, Chai or other beverage will please the palate. You'll also find local baked goods at their locations. |

| Gregory's Coffee | To provide you with the perfect cup of coffee -- that was the vision of Gregory Zamfotis when he opened Gregory's Coffee in 2006. Zamfotis' goals for his coffee shops are all about quality, consistency, great customer service, not paying too much, and efficiency. The latter, efficiency, is one of the main principles of Gregory's Coffee. Their systems are set up for volume so getting in and out with the perfect cup of coffee is the main objective of the company. If you try one thing here then order the AeroPress. It's their preferred brew method. Gregory's Coffee also has house-made treats that are prepared from scratch daily. The company now has 29 locations across NY, NJ and Washington, DC. |

Lyman, who worked for a mortgage company, and Schlader, an actor/bartender, now run 10 locations in New York. Their idea for Birch is to not over complicate things by serving too many drinks but rather to make great coffee and give customers a memorable experience. The cold brews, lattes, flat whites, cappuccinos are all good. They also carry baked goods from local bakeries. |

If you're at Breads then your buying the Chocolate Babka ... even if you don't like chocolate -- or babka. This chocolate loaf consistently ranks as one of the best in New York City. So what's in it? The usual stuff like butter, flour, sugar, but the two main ingredients are chocolate chips and Nutella. What makes this babka so sensational is that it's always fresh. Always. Its freshness helps give Bread's babka its incredible flavor with a fantastic balance of crunchy edges, buttery, flaky dough laced with layers of chocolate and Nutella. It's one of those moments in your life when you find sometime incredible that you compare everything else to. "I just had a baby, but that's nothing compared to that Bread's babka." "I won the lottery! But that Bread's babka is still my greatest moment." |
