About: Janie's Life Changing Baked Goods
Janie’s Life Changing Baked Goods is a New York City bakery known for reworking classic desserts into highly structured, shippable baked goods. Founded by Janie Deegan, the bakery built its reputation by focusing on a tight product lineup, consistent execution, and desserts designed to hold up outside of a traditional bakery setting. Rather than offering an expansive menu, Janie’s Life-Changing Baked Goods prioritizes a small number of signature items made with traditional techniques and familiar flavors. This approach has helped the bakery scale from local sales to nationwide shipping while maintaining product quality and brand recognition. The company also integrates second-chance employment into its business model, pairing operational growth with community impact.
The Pie Crust Cookies
Janie’s most recognizable product is the pie crust cookie, a hybrid dessert that combines elements of a traditional pie with the convenience of a cookie. The structure typically includes a flaky pie crust base, a dense filling layer, and a crumb or streusel topping, creating contrast in texture while keeping the dessert portable. Unlike standard cookies, pie crust cookies emphasize butter-forward dough and layered construction rather than spread and chew. This makes them easier to portion, stack, package, and ship — a key factor in their popularity for mail-order desserts and gift boxes.
By highlighting the crust — often considered the best part of a pie — the cookie delivers a flavor profile that feels nostalgic while offering a distinct eating experience. This format also allows for a wide range of fillings, including nut-based, chocolate, and fruit-forward varieties, without compromising structure. Today, pie crust cookies remain the foundation of Janie’s product lineup and a defining example of the bakery’s approach: take a classic dessert, refine its form, and optimize it for modern consumption.
Chef's Note
Janie’s engineers her Pie Crust Cookies from the base up rather than building around fillings. The result is baked goods that balance flavor, structure, and shelf stability—designed to travel, portion cleanly, and taste just as good days later as they do fresh
Experience
Our experience at Café du Monde was very pleasant. It wasn’t busy at all, but the cafe was popping with plenty of staff. The staff lacked personality and enthusiasm, but nothing off putting. The cafe was clean with plenty of seating. Music was playing on the streets, people were genuinely enjoying themselves and the atmosphere was perfect. We ordered nine beignets … Well, we gotta take pictures and some had to be sacrificed 🙂
The beignets came out remarkably fresh with so much powdered sugar Scarface would be impressed. The experience is messy with the first bite flinging powdered sugar everywhere. As you eat your way through your beignets, you forget about the mess and just get lost in the warm, crunchy, chewy flavors.
Review
Appearance
The beignets are square shaped, light brown in color and come stacked on a small plate. They are doused with loads of powdered sugar that blankets them into one oddly shaped unit, but ripens them for deconstruction.
Touch
Oh the mess. The beignets are light and warm to the touch, but you won’t even think about that when you are getting painted with white powdered sugar the second you pick them up.
Smell
The aroma is similar to a fried doughnut or funnel cake from your state fair. It smells fresh but lightly aromatic.
Taste
The beignets are warm and pillowy at first bite. As soon as your teeth sink in, you’re hit with the sweet flavor of powdered sugar, followed immediately by a fresh crunch, then a soft, slightly chewy interior. The flavor is rich and slightly buttery, melting in your mouth as you try and catch the powdered sugar that is falling off your lips. Eating them will be messy, but it’s a small price to pay for a few minutes of intimacy 😀
What to Tell Your Friends
Flakey, fruity cookies. One bite in and you’re already planning who isn’t getting one.
