About: Mah Ze Dahr Bakery

Umber Ahmad, a former investment banker, is the owner and wizard behind Mah-Ze-Dahr Bakery. She left her career in banking after one of her clients, celebrity chef Tom Colicchio, tasted her treats and urged her to make a business out of it. In 2013, Ahmad started her business online selling to consumers and wholesale clients. In 2016 she officially opened Mah-Ze-Dahr Bakery in West Village. In Urdu (the official language of Pakistan) mazedar describes the taste essence of food — or magic in food. If you’re here for the cookies then make sure you grab the Chocolate Explosion — if there are any left. Although small in size, these Van-Dyke-colored-cookies are rich in color, powered with sugar and chewy until the last bite. You’ll also find Chocolate Chip, Black and White, Ginger Snaps and Shortbread cookies ready to be devoured.

Mah-Ze-Dahr is the magic or essence that makes something special. You know something tastes great but you can’t pinpoint exactly what that is? To Umber Ahmad, that’s the mah-ze-dahr. She’s an admitted lover of chocolate and this is evident by the quality of chocolate treats that she offers.

Mah-Ze-Dahr Bakery is a bit of an upscale bakery. This isn’t to focus on the posh members of society, but rather to provide a level of elegance to the brand. The bakery is clean and tidy. The food on display looks clean cut and classy. The staff is friendly and welcoming. The location in West Village is narrow but plenty of seating to sit and stay awhile.

Appearance

The Devil in Ganache Cake can be purchased as a whole or by the slice. Either way, it’s extremely elegant in appearance. The thick layer of chocolate ganache is smooth as silk and shines like glass. 

Touch

The cake is super moist to touch. The fork melts into the cake and is quickly gets coated with layers of chocolate cake and icing. 

Smell

The smell of fresh chocolate cake and sweet icing vaporizes your nose. Your mouth may water knowing the best is yet to come. 

Taste

If you’re a chocolate cake kind of person then his cake is going to make your toes curl. At first bite, the cake is super moist and oh-so-chocolatey. The flavor is rich and smooth — almost melting in your mouth. The texture is light and the layers of icing make it ultra velvety.
