About: Milk Bar
Milk Bar is the creation of baking wizard Christina Tosi. She, along with Momofuku owner David Chang, combined forces to create one of NYC’s most popular bakery in 2008. Milk Bar serves unique soft serve ice cream, milkshakes, milk quakes, cake truffles, cake, coffee, crack pie and much more. Their desserts are a favorite among locals and tourist alike. While their birthday cake is quite possibly the best thing on the menu, Tosi’s cookies are creative and fun. You’ll find such flavors as Compost, Confetti, Caramel Grapefruit Snap, Corn, Blueberry and Cream, Cornflake Marshmallow Chocolate Chip, Chocolate-Chocolate Cookie, Perfect 10 and Best Freaking Cookie. All of Milk Bar’s cookies are innovative with a chewy texture and innovative flavors. While you won’t be writing to aunt Helga in Australia, their cookies are still satisfying and memorable.
Chef's Note
Christina Tosi uses a secret ingredient in all of her baking: vanilla extract. She loves it and says not to be afraid to overuse it because it adds so much flavor. She says you can never overdo vanilla extract. Tosi also recommends always using unsalted, European-style butters because of the higher fat content that improves flavor. This is the same reason they use whole milk in their recipes. She also uses milk powder in a lot of her recipes which gives baked goods an added depth of flavor.
Experience
Our experiences at Milk Bar have always been positive. The staff is also polite and helpful. On multiple occasions that staff showed us what they use and how they make certain things like hot chocolate. It’s always a fun sharing experience. Other times you walk in and their singing and having a good time.
The bakeries are always clean with good lighting and give off great vibes.
Review
Appearance
The cookie is medium in size and light brown in color. Mini butterscotch chips crest the surface and pieces of chips and pretzels are scattered throughout.
Touch
To touch, the cookie has good weight for its size at 2.75 ounces. The bottom of the cookie is a little buttery while the rest of the cookie is soft and baked evenly throughout.
Smell
The cookie lacks any of the prototypical cookie smells like butter or chocolate. It has more of a bland smell until you break the cookie apart and reveal the smell of butterscotch and hodgepodge of ingredients.
Taste
The first bite of the Compost Cookie is a bit of a wild one. It’s salty, chewy and full of butterscotch. As with other Milk Bar cookies, the texture goes well with all of the elements within the cookie. It’s a fun cookie to try or bring to an event but not one you’d write home about.
What to Tell Your Friends
A wild, chewy ride that you have to try at least once. The butterscotch, potato chips and pretzels create a tasty flavor profile that is unique to any cookie.
