About: Ovenly
Owners Agatha Kulaga and Erin Patinkin left their college degrees and 9-5 jobs behind to follow their passion for baking. They met at a food-focused book club and the rest is history. Their recipes come from Erin’s grandmother’s rich baking history and Agatha’s upbringing. The combination gives you a rich, historic recipes that have been passed down and perfected. Some of their most popular treats are Brooklyn Blackout Cake — and the owner’s favorites — the Salted Peanut Butter Cookie and the Salted Chocolate Chip Cookie.
Chef's Note
Ovenly uses high-quality ingredients for all of their goods. They use, and highly recommend, Wuthrich butter (83% European Style Butter), King Arthur flour, cocoa and chocolate chips from Callebaut and locally sourced ingredients from small farms.
Ovenly has a variety of baked goods that appeal to both vegans and non-vegans. You’ll find they put a little more of an emphasis on vegan treats and gluten-free treats than most bakeries.
What also makes them unique is that they tend to use a balance of sweet and salty in a lot of their creations. In addition, they also offer a variety of artisanal coffees inside their bakeshops which is unique in the industry.
Experience
Our experiences at Ovenly have always been terrific. The staff is very engaging, patient and friendly. They are happy and welcome you when you walk in.
The bakeries are clean and smell wonderful (as you would imagine). They always have a wide variety of desserts available and locally-brewed coffee at the ready. The staff is very familiar with the companies products and will offer up tasty suggestions.
Review
Appearance
The Brooklyn Blackout Cake is a dark, pitch black cake. The cake is luxuriously smooth with silky blankets of the Dark Chocolate Pudding Buttercream spread perfectly on two layers. The cake is shines from its moisture and glistens from its icing.
Touch
The cake is super moist. Its texture is the ideal combination of density and fluffiness. It has a super-soft texture while the icing is fluffy and smooth.
Smell
Chocolate and butter smells are subtle to the nose, but they exist. You get a sweet buttery aroma with a faded dark chocolate aroma.
Taste
The first bite is heaven. Especially if you’re a chocolate cake lover. The wonderful chocolate flavor with the cake’s moist texture creates a magnificent combination for chocolate cake nirvana. The icing is a little sweet by itself, but the dark chocolate cake really brings all the flavors together.
The cake holds together really well from the moment you slice it with your fork and stuff it in your mouth. The overall flavor isn’t overwhelming but chocolatey, rich and smooth. There is a kiss of sweetness and whisper of salt. Overall, a perfect chocolate cake that is easy to love.
What to Tell Your Friends
A perfect chocolate cake that tastes as good as it looks. A slice of this and a glass a milk can make you forget about even the worst of your problems. It’s heroic.
