About: Ovenly
Owners Agatha Kulaga and Erin Patinkin left their college degrees and 9-5 jobs behind to follow their passion for baking. They met at a food-focused book club and the rest is history. Their recipes come from Erin’s grandmother’s rich baking history and Agatha’s upbringing. Combined you’re getting rich, historic recipes that have been passed down and perfected. Two fantastic cookies that you’ll find at Ovenly are the Salted Peanut Butter and the Salted Chocolate Chip (secretly vegan).
Chef's Note
Ovenly uses high-quality ingredients for all of their goods. They use, and highly recommend, Wuthrich butter (83% European Style Butter), King Arthur flour, cocoa and chocolate chips from Callebaut and locally sourced ingredients from small farms.
Ovenly has a variety of baked goods that appeal to both vegans and non-vegans. You’ll find they put a little more of an emphasis on vegan treats and gluten-free treats than most bakeries.
What also makes them unique is that they tend to use a balance of sweet and salty in a lot of their creations. In addition, they also offer a variety of artisanal coffees inside their bakeshops which is unique in the industry.
Experience
Whenever you visit any of the Ovenly locations you are always treated like you are part of the neighborhood bakery. The bakeries are always clean and the staff is very warm, welcoming and helpful. They are a staple of New York City who are loved by locals and tourists alike.
Review
Appearance
The Sticky Donut Cake is large and in charge. Its beautifully golden brown and polished up with a shinning layer of glaze. The surface shows folds of dough that only the most delectable of sticky buns can do. The moment you set eyes on it, you want it.
Touch
To the touch, this donut cake has good weight. It’s a little sticky but by no means messy. It’s moist with a little give in the dough, but firm enough to hold shape when you sink your teeth into it.
Smell
The Sticky Donut Cake doesn’t have a strong scent to it. It smells of a yeast doughnut with a light aroma of butterscotch glaze.
Taste
At first bite you immediately get a sweet taste of glaze with a mouthful of perfectly dense donut cake. The cinnamon comes alive in your mouth but stop short of taking over the flavor profile. It’s sticky, it’s heavy, it’s delicious.
What to Tell Your Friends
It’s tastes as good as it looks. It’s dense and moist with a nice chew to each bite. The glaze and cinnamon are on point and make this Sticky Donut Cake a must try for all sticky bun fans.
