About: Poseidon Bakery

Poseidon Bakery, opened in 1923, is a family-owned Greek bakery located in the heart of Midtown Manhattan. When you walk in to Poseidon Bakery you’ll likely be greeted by owner Lili Fable – who was once a guest on Martha Stewart’s show – with a warm pleasant welcome. If you don’t know anything about Greek baked goods have no fear. Lili will graciously teach you anything you want to know. Everything here is fantastic. Everything. It truly is an authentic Greek bakery. The best in the city. They also make their own filo bread (a very thin unleavened dough used for making pastries) that is actually very hard to make and rare to find a company that makes their own. With so many options you can’t go wrong, but two fantastic options are the Finikia (Melomakarona) or the Baklava. The Finikia are these little football-shaped cookies topped with crushed almonds. The flavor in these little guys will blow your mind. They are super addictive. The Baklava is this honey-soaked roll that is flaky, sticky and oh-so-amazing.

Chef's Note

Everything made here is authentic, as the recipes have been passed down for generations.

Experience

If you want a quintessential neighborhood bakery in New York City, this is your spot. Lili is truly incredible and makes you feel very welcome every time you visit. She’s very knowledgable and pleasant to speak with. When you meet her it’s like meeting the Greek grandma you never had. The bakery is clean and loaded with Greek treats. Every time we visit we always leave with a bag full of goodies and a great story to tell.

Review

Appearance

The finikia are small, oval shaped cookies. They measure about two inches and weight around .85 ounces. They are golden brown like that of a Greek God and coated with honey, crushed almonds and walnuts. They look good but their appearance doesn’t do them any justice.

Touch

The finikia are smooth with a very subtle glazed texture from the honey. You can feel how moist the cookie is the second you hold it, as the crumbly almonds stick to your fingers. For being small they have good weight. This is because, as rumor has it, they are loaded with magic.

Smell

The smell of the finikia made by Poseidon Bakery is wonderfully pleasant. The most prominent scent is the sweet smell of honey with a hint of almonds.

Taste

The first bite into a Poseidon Bakery finikia cookie is pure bliss. It’s a magnificent combination of honey and almonds. A flawless marriage we can all be envious of. The dough is moist with a little crunch from the almond. The flavor of honey tickles every single one of your teeth and sticks around even after the last bite. The finikia are easily one of the best cookies we’ve ever had. Owner Lili Fable and her family have also anointed the finikia as their favorite treat. Ask any Greek person about finikia and watch them gush over them. Put these babies on your bucket list.

What to Tell Your Friends

Pound for pound the best cookie ever created. A moist cookie, flavored with honey and almonds that will make you feel like you just met a Greek God or Goddess. These cookies will win back your ex, add years to your life, and help discover world peace.
