About: Salswee Bakery
Salswee Bakery opened in May 2024 in New York City’s Flatiron District, expanding from the owner behind Shakalaka Bakery in Flushing, Queens. The French-Asian concept quickly gained attention for its hyper-realistic fruit-shaped desserts—intricately designed pastries filled with mousses, coulis, and cream layers that feel closer to edible art than everyday sweets; however, Salswee’s menu goes deeper than presentation. The bakery’s pastries fuse classic French craftsmanship with nuanced Asian flavors, creating combinations that feel both familiar and entirely new. Inside those sculpted shells are elements like fresh fruit, whipped ganache, mousses, and cream-based fillings.
Among the bakery’s most talked-about creations is the Flatiron Croissant—a chocolate-dipped, flattened take on the classic laminated pastry that has become one of the more viral croissant styles in New York City. This soft, yet flakey pastry brings all the flavors of a fluffy croissant and packs into a dense yummy treat.
Chef's Note
Salswee leans heavily into visual perfection, treating each pastry almost like a display piece before it ever becomes dessert.
Experience
Our experience at Salswee was … fine. The shop was busy, though the narrow layout made it feel more crowded than it probably was. Everything looked spotless, and the pastries behind the glass were genuinely beautiful—almost too perfect to eat. The space felt organized, polished, and visually impressive. The staff, however, were simply going through the motions. No one was rude, but there wasn’t much warmth either. You didn’t quite feel like a welcomed guest—more like a quick stop in a grocery store line. Still, the experience was easy: no long wait, no real issues, and overall a fun visit that was, in the most honest way possible, just … fine.
Review
Appearance
The Flatiron Croissant is a generously sized, flattened pastry with a perfectly golden outer shell. Its crisp, flaky layers are uniformly shaped, each one looking as precise as the next. The bottom half is dipped in a glossy coat of milk chocolate and finished with delicate mini sprinkle pearls for a subtle touch of sweetness and shine
Touch
To the touch these pastries have some weight because of its compact creation. The flaky crust is a bit buttery but just every so slightly. The chocolate shell is smooth but incredibly inviting … daring you to take a man-sized bite.
Smell
The smell is a buttery aroma you expect from a fresh croissant—rich, soft, and slightly sweet. As you get closer, the scent deepens with notes of toasted pastry and melted milk chocolate. Most of these smells are subtle but they exist.
Taste
The first bite breaks with a soft, delicate crunch as the golden layers gently crack beneath your teeth, offering just a slight resistance as the pastry pulls away. The richness of real butter arrives first—warm, subtle, and comforting—followed closely by the silky sweetness of milk chocolate. The contrast between the crisp exterior, tender center, and smooth chocolate coating creates a balanced indulgence that feels satisfying without becoming heavy. It’s the kind of bite that makes you pause for a moment, quietly appreciating the texture and the dense, compact croissant you’re suddenly very glad exists.
Overall, this is a good pastry but you’re not going to remember “your first time” with this one. It’s not it. It’s good and enjoyable though. We rated it a 6.3 because it’s better than average and offered a different eating experience.
What to Tell Your Friends
It has all the delicious components of a top-quality pastry, but in a fun compact creation. You gotta try it at least once, even if it’s just for your Insta, girl!
