The Truth and Reality of Exercise

Over the years we have had many questions from clients regarding fitness, exercise, diet, training, etc. Today we want to speak on one of those questions to offer some clarity to those looking to get into fitness, start a weight loss journey or hire a trainer.

This specific question usually comes after working with a client over a period of time. Maybe the clients have reached their goals or maybe they are still working towards it, but the question still arises:

“When does this end? At what point am I done with training?”

If you are a trainer or have ever had one in the past, you are likely familiar with this question. It’s a good question and one that – in the moment – is hard to answer. So today we will answer this for you.

The Answer

Regardless of why you started your fitness journey and what your goal is, your weight and your health will always be a process … a long-term game.

When you make the amazing choice to put an emphasis on your health, lose weight and be more active it’s an infinite game you will always have to play, but it is one that is always worth playing.

Let me explain.

In your life, there are infinite and there are finite games. The infinite game will always beat the finite game because it never stops. In fitness, you have finite goals such as losing weight, getting stronger, having nice a butt, getting bigger arms, etc. These goals are finite because we know what the goal is, we know how to get there and there is an end and an outcome. The infinite game has no specific goal, no plan, but the point of the game is to keep the game going.

Most people approach the infinite game of fitness with a finite frame of mind. That is, they think once they hit their goal then it’s over. But the reality is that their health is forever – you don’t win at health. The point isn’t to get healthy, but to stay healthy. You want to stay in the game and keep it going. It’s the infinite game of health. It’s a game you will always have to work on, a game they must continue to be played, but one that is worth playing.

With that being said, once you play and win at your finite game (hit your goal), you can stop training towards that goal; however, you must now find a fitness game that you never want to quit. Find an infinite game that you can play forever. Maybe your infinite game is walking every evening, lifting weights, yoga, hiking, etc. But you have to find something you enjoy that overrides your old habits if you want to win at the game of health and fitness. There will be many times when you have a bad week or a month, there will be plenty of lousy times to work through, just be willing to keep playing and you will win the game.
