Walk to Balanced Rock at Arches National Park

Walk to Balanced Rock at Arches National Park

Balanced Rock is one of the most iconic structures in Arches National Park. This massive 128-foot tall rock appears to be on the verge of an inevitable collapse, but a closer inspection will prove otherwise. Make no mistake, this 3,600 ton boulder will come crashing down at some point, but for now, it’s as safe as a carrot in a candy store.

Balanced Rock is a unique rock formation that appears to be defying gravity. Located right off the park’s main road, from that distance it appears that the next sneeze might be all it takes to tip this Goliath over the edge. Once you get up close and personal with the big fella, you’ll find that it is well secured to the rock base below. However, just like many of the rock structures before it, including “Chip-Off-the-Old-Block” which collapsed in 1975, Balanced Rock will eventually fall, but not likely in any of our lifetimes.

The looped trail around Balanced Rock is very short at .3 miles roundtrip, but exploring the area can add some steps to this micro hike. As we set out on the trail, we walked the path to the base and then climbed up top for a closer look. Once up close, we saw how secure Balanced Rock truly was and realized how deceptive its angles can be. After a little photography, we set out to explore the area before completing the loop.

Because of it’s convenience and proximity to the road, exploring Balanced Rock and checking out its unique structure is a must-do. The area surrounding the trail is very scenic and makes for some terrific photo opportunities.

Challenge Yourself

Balance Rock hike is quite possibly the shortest hike you’ll ever go on, but this doesn’t mean you can’t be challenged. Challenge yourself to capture the rock at sunset. During the day, Balanced Rock makes for a great photo, but as the sun sets it becomes saturated in a deep red-orange color that makes for an incredible photo.
