Week 1 — The Missed Check-In
At 7:18 a.m. on a Wednesday, the front desk flagged an anomaly.
It wasn’t an alarm. It wasn’t an emergency notification. It was the kind of alert most people ignore because it usually means nothing.
A member hadn’t checked out.
At this gym, every visit followed the same system: scan in, train, scan out. It wasn’t optional. It wasn’t new. Members had been doing it long enough that the motion was automatic—phone out, tap, leave.
Most missed check-outs were easy to explain. A phone died. A scan didn’t register. A coach manually corrected it later.
This one was different.
The missing check-out belonged to Evan Miller.
Evan wasn’t new. He wasn’t inconsistent. He had been coming to the 6:00 a.m. class for over two years, five days a week, without exception. His attendance history was almost boring in its consistency. Same arrival window. Same workout pace. Same exit timing.
The system showed Evan checked in at 5:47 a.m.
Right on time.
The 6:00 a.m. class ran as scheduled. No injuries. No incidents. The coach later described it as “uneventful.” Attendance was average. Energy was normal.
Class ended at 6:05 a.m.
Everyone left.
Except Evan didn’t scan out.
By 7:30 a.m., the front desk assumed it was a glitch.
By 8:15 a.m., someone noticed Evan’s car was still in the lot.
By noon, concern replaced assumption.
Security footage confirmed Evan entered the building, completed the workout, and exited the gym floor. Cameras covering the main training area were operational and showed nothing unusual. Evan finished his final set, wiped down his station, and gathered his belongings.
Then the footage stopped telling a clear story.
The hallway cameras leading to the locker rooms had been offline due to a scheduled system update between 6:10 and 6:40 a.m. That window covered the exact period Evan would normally leave the building.
No footage. No confirmation.
Only routine—until it broke.
Three people interacted with Evan after class.
A coach recalls Evan pausing briefly to ask about modifying a movement later in the week. “Nothing unusual,” they said. “He seemed fine.”
Another member remembers Evan standing near the lockers, scrolling on his phone, waiting for space to open up. “He looked distracted,” they added. “But people are distracted all the time.”
The front desk attendant believes Evan walked past without stopping. “I saw him head toward the exit,” they said. “I remember because I was surprised he didn’t scan out, but I assumed he forgot.”
All three agree on one thing: Evan left on his own.
But the system doesn’t.
The check-out scanner was working that morning. Logs show dozens of successful scans between 6:05 and 6:20 a.m. No outages. No errors.
And Evan had never forgotten to scan out before. Not once. Not after two years. Not after hundreds of early mornings.
The detail that raised concern wasn’t that Evan disappeared.
It was that he broke a habit he never broke.
And habits don’t usually fail without a reason.
Especially not for someone whose routine was that precise.
