The Last Lap — Week 1
The pool was packed.
Too packed.
Saturday afternoons at Wednesday Fitness always were.
Families crowded the shallow end.
Lap swimmers cut through the middle lanes.
Kids splashed near the wall while lifeguards blew whistles every few minutes trying to keep order.
The air smelled like chlorine and sunscreen.
Noise echoed everywhere.
Nobody noticed anything unusual at first.
That was the problem.
The Dive
Twenty-two-year-old Ava Morales arrived just after 1:00 PM.
Regular member.
Strong swimmer.
Quiet.
The kind of person staff recognized but didn’t know much about.
She checked in.
Grabbed lane four.
Started swimming laps.
Nothing strange.
Nothing memorable.
Until later.
Because eventually…
someone remembered seeing her jump into the water.

The Friend
