Review

About

Wicked Whoopies was founded by Amy Bouchard in 1994 in Gardiner, Maine. What started as a home-based business quickly grew into a beloved brand. The company’s flagship store in Freeport opened its doors in 2012, bringing their signature treats to the masses.

Amy’s whoopie pies were deemed “wicked” by her friends and family (a Mainer term for something great), thus creating the name Wicked Whoopies. Today Wicked Whoopies makes about 10,000 whoopie pies a day and ships them to their retail store in Freeport, distributors, and customers across America.

But what is a whoopie you ask?

What They Are Known For

Whoopie Pies

For the uninitiated, a whoopie pie is a classic New England dessert consisting of two soft, cake-like cookies with a creamy filling sandwiched between them. Traditionally, the cookies are chocolate, and the filling is a fluffy vanilla cream. However, Wicked Whoopies has taken this simple treat to new heights with a variety of flavors and creative combinations.

The Jumbo Whoopie

The granddaddy of all whoopie pies. This five-pound whoopie is loaded with almost 2 inches of cream and sandwiched with the same delicious cookies on the outside. It was created with the idea of offering an alternative to a wedding or birthday cake. If you are looking to impress a crowd, bring this treat to your next gathering and watch your friend’s faces light up. And even if you can’t finish it, it looks great in photos.

Experience

Wicked Whoopies is located in Freeport, ME. It’s a slow-paced, small-town area. The employees that work at the store are just as you would expect — chill, friendly locals. We found the employees to be welcoming and helpful. Not overly cheery, but neutral.

The store is very spacious and clean. The whoopie pies are organized cleanly and sorted by flavors on one side of the store, with plenty of seating near the front entrance.

Pricing

The price per whoopie pie is $3.25 (give or take). The price of the Jumbo Whoopie is $18 or around $20 if it’s flavored. The pricing, in our opinion, is very reasonable.

What people are saying

What they like:

“These whoopie pies are delicous. I love the size, texture and variety of flavors that they offer. If you are going to Maine, it’s worth the trip.”

What they don’t like:

“They don’t travel well because they smoosh very easily. If you are going to travel with them, they need to be protected a bit. Cookie is good, but cream is too sweet.”

Conclusion

Whoopie pies seem to be one of those treats that you either like them or you don't. I happen to like them. The cookie is soft and most of the flavors are prominent in each, with a some falling a little flat. They are a little sweet so you likely won't be overindulging, but we found them to be delightful, as we brought a couple dozen home for friends and family. We think, if you are into whoopie pies, then you'll like Wicked Whoopies.
