About: Wicked Whoopies
Wicked Whoopies started in 1994 when Amy Bouchard began baking whoopie pies from her home kitchen in Gardiner, Maine. What began as a way to earn a little extra money while raising her kids quickly turned into a full-blown dessert operation once people got a taste. Her version of the classic Maine treat—two soft, chocolate cake rounds hugging a thick cloud of sweet cream filling—had a way of disappearing faster than anyone planned. Today, Wicked Whoopies bakes thousands of these dangerously snackable cake sandwiches each day from its Gardiner bakery, with a retail shop in Freeport, Maine, and ships them nationwide.
Chef's Note
Wicked Whoopies sticks to a true cake-style whoopie pie, baking soft, fluffy cake rounds instead of the firmer cookie-style shells some bakeries use. That pillowy texture, paired with a thick cloud of sweet cream filling, gives their pies a lighter bite that feels more like a handheld cake than a cookie sandwich.
Experience
Our stop at Wicked Whoopies fun and quiet—so quiet there were maybe four people in the whole shop. The woman at the counter started off a little reserved but eventually warmed up and chatted with us while we stared down their impressive lineup of whoopie pies. We searched through all the flavors until we discovered, sitting behind the counter, was the holy grail: the legendary 5-pound jumbo whoopie pie.
Review
Appearance
A Wicked Whoopie pie looks like two round, cake discs stacked together with a thick band of bright white cream filling visible between them. The cakes are smooth and evenly baked with slightly rounded edges, creating a neat, handheld dessert that resembles a chocolate cake sandwich.
Touch
If you pressed it lightly with your fingers, the cakes would feel soft and springy with a slight give, while the cream filling in the center would feel smooth and thick. The outside of the cakes would be tender and delicate, leaving traces of cake on your fingers.
Smell
It carries a sweet bakery aroma of vanilla sugar and fresh cake, with the specific flavor—whether chocolate, peanut butter, pumpkin, or lemon—gently rising through the scent.
Taste
At first bite your teeth sink easily into the soft cake layers before meeting the thick band of cream in the center. The sweetness of the filling greets you first, then the flavor of the cake follows, and finally the personality of the pie—whether chocolate, peanut butter, pumpkin, lemon, or another flavor—slowly unfolds and lingers at the end of the bite. They are a little sweet for me personally, but that’s a whoopie pie for you. We enjoyed all of the flavors, the Maple and Banana standing out more than the rest, but they are all worth trying.
We scored this a 6.3, not because it’s bad, but because we think 8’s, 9’s, and 10’s should earned. People are too generous with their rankings so we have to be tougher :). We liked these whoopie pies and you will too.
What to Tell Your Friends
It’s fluffy, creamy and wicked good. Straight up, they are low-key ridiculous.
